Doesn't China harvest organs from prison inmates?

South Carolina Lawmakers Consider Cutting Prison Time for Inmates Who
Donate Organs
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Inmates in South Carolina could soon find that a
kidney is worth 180 days.
Lawmakers are considering legislation that would let prisoners donate
organs or bone marrow in exchange for time off their sentences.

If you were on the waiting list for a kidney, you'd think that was a
GREAT idea. |

Why not just offer 10 or 20 Gs to anyone willing to sell a kidney?
Isn't that how the free market is supposed to work? |

I[m not sure which is worse
; the very idea of doing this or that a kidney is only worth six months of
someone's life.

You can go to India or Bangledesh or Bangkok and do that (and not
nearly that expensive!) In the US we don't consider it quite
civilized.
But also, in the US organ transplant is done only in teaching
hospitals and only under Medicare. So even if you -could- buy a
kidney, you'd have a $40k operation to pay for, plus follow-up care in
the 10s of thousands.
The attitude of capitalism is that only the rich -deserve-
transplants. Luckily we've already grown past that in the US. |

I can't imagine anyone in their right mind selling an organ for six months.
I would hold out for at least five years. |

I have heard of US prisons where inmates got a month or two off of
their time for donating blood.

Donating blood is one thing. I've done that for a cookie and a glass of
juice and the chance to be close to pretty stranger for a few minutes. A
few hours and your body replaces the blood that was removed.
But donating a kidney or part of your liver... that's serious business. |

It sounds a little strange, I know, but people do donate kidneys
voluntarily. So long as the kidney isn't sold to the highest bidder,
I don't have a problem with inmates getting a sentence reduction. |

They could solve the inmate overcrowding problem by getting them to donate
their hearts... |

Having a kidney removed is a MUCH more serious business than having
one implanted. When they take a kidney out they have to make an
incision that goes about halfway around the abdomen. But to
transplant one they only make a little hole in front, above the hip,
and stick the kidney in there and hook it up in parallel to the blood
supply and the ureter. When one person donates a kidney to another,
the donor is usually in the hospital for two weeks while the recipient
is up and dancing around in three or four days. |

Now why would I make something like that up?
Look it up! Know anyone who has a transplant? I know several. |
