Gunmen Abduct LG Boss in Nigeria
by Dennis Udoma
http://allafrica.com/stories/200703020251.html
NIGER Delta militants, who kidnapped the Chairman of Ikot Abasi Local Government Area
in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Aniefiok Ekong have demanded N50 million ransom for his
release.
This is as friends and colleagues of Ekong have intensified search to free him from
the unidentified gunmen who took him hostage on Wednesday.
Daily Champion authoritatively gathered that the Association of Local Government
Chairmen of Nigeria (ALGON) was seriously holding meetings over his release but
described the N50 million ransom demanded by the militants as outrageous, saying no
local government council can afford to foot the bill.
Our correspondent learnt that Mr. Ekong, alongside his driver and the Personal
Assistant were taken hostage by men suspected to be Niger Delta militants operating
in the region in recent times.
The incident, which happened on his way from Ikot Abasi to Uyo, the state capital at
about 7.30pm was the first of such development where a top government functionary was
taken hostage in the state.
According to the Head of Personnel (HOP), of the local government, Mr. D. E.
Etukudoh, the chairman came back from Lagos on official duty that fateful Wednesday
February 21, 2007 to attend a legislative meeting with his councillors and
stakeholders meeting of ALSCON after which he left for Uyo when he was whisked mid
way by the militants.
Mr. Etukudoh, had written to the commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy
Affairs, Mr Ime Ekpo-Atai, Commissioner of Police, State Security Service (SSS) and
Chairman, Local Government Service Commission alerting them of the development.
The letter dated, 22nd February, 2007 referenced; IKA/AD/SEC/T.001 and signed by the
Head of Personnel, Mr D.E. Eukudoh, read inter alia; "With due respect, sense of duty
and commitment to Service, I hereby bring to your knowledge, the kidnapping of the
Head of Council, Ikot Abasi Local Government, Hon. Aniefiok U. Ekong with is official
driver, his Personal Assistant, Mr Essien Usoro and Mr. Idiong Oton, respectively
"The unfortunate development occurred on the evening of Wednesday 21st February, 2007
along Ikot Abasi road at about 7.30pm by some unknown persons ", Etukudoh complained.

"The army that will defeat terrorism doesn't wear uniforms, or drive
Humvees, or calls in air-strikes. It doesn't have a high command, or
high security, or a high budget. The army that can defeat terrorism
does battle quietly, clearing minefields and vaccinating children. It
undermines military dictatorships and military lobbyists. It subverts
sweatshops and special interests.Where people feel powerless, it
helps them organize for change, and where people are powerful, it
reminds them of their responsibility." ~~~~ Author Unknown ~~~~
